Summary:

This course provides an overview of good network security practices. This course also shows users how to obtain and implement software patches and upgrades, and discusses backup and antivirus procedures.

Objectives:

After completing this course, students will be able to:
  • Identify the purpose, benefits and characteristics of using a firewall and/or a proxy
  • Given a scenario, predict the impact of a particular security implementation on network functionality (e.g., blocking port numbers, encryption, etc)
  • Identify good practices to ensure network security, including selection of a security model, standard password practices and procedures, and the need to employ data encryption
  • Identify the kinds of test documentation that are usually available regarding a vendor's patches, fixes, and/or upgrades
  • Given a network maintenance scenario, demonstrate awareness of standard backup procedures, the need for periodic application of software patches and other fixes, and the need to install and update anti-virus software

Technical Requirements:

200MHz Pentium with 32MB Ram. 640 x 480 256-color video (800 x 600 is recommended). Windows 98, NT, 2000, or XP. Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher required.
